Hannah Lawson joined John McAslan + Partners in 2001 from the Newcastle-based practice, Faulkner Brown, and was appointed as a director in 2005. She is co-leader of JMP’s Culture and Education unit, with Murray Smith. The unit concentrates on working in the public sector, and with end-user clients, where highly detailed consultation is an essential part of the creative process. Lawson has a particular interest in sustainability, and environmentally responsive design. One recent exemplar project led by her was the design of the forthcoming United World College in the remote highlands of Kenya, an innovative, low-impact series of buildings. Lawson was also project director for the Ailsa Craig Visitor Centre on the west coast of Scotland, whose form mimics the coastal dunescape. Her design leadership of JMP’s proposed British pavilion for the 2010 Shanghai Expo was even more adventurous, and based on an ascending Ribbon of Culture.
