Murray Smith joined John McAslan + Partners in 1990, and has been involved in a broad range of projects, whose size and type cover most building sectors and procurement routes. He is co-director, with Hannah Lawson, of Unit 3, which covers Culture and Education projects. The unit concentrates on working in the public realm, and with end-user clients, where highly detailed consultation is a key driver of the creative design process. Major projects led by Murray include the Quad Building at Kingston University, the SOAS Library redevelopment, masterplans for the University of London, and the Engineering and Reception Building at the University of Southampton. He has a particular interest in the cultural identity of buildings, and has taught in architecture schools at the University of Glasgow, Edinburgh University, Cardiff University, University of Portsmouth, and Kingston University. Murray has also edited JMP’s in-house Journals, and its practice monograph, Culture of Building: The Architecture of John McAslan + Partners.
