This scheme is the first example of contemporary Modernist architecture in the Algerian capital. Designed for future flexibility, the Embassy building signals Britain's long-term political, cultural and commercial links with Algeria. The building's environmental performance has a BREEAM 'Good' rating, making it one of Algeria's most environmentally sophisticated buildings. The reinforced concrete structure has sandstone façades and timber screens which provide shade. Located below the Moorish style Ambassador's residence, the new building is skilfully integrated in a garden re-designed by the practice's landscape team, incorporating varied tree and plant species while retaining views out over the Bay of Algiers beyond.
