This innovative High School and Library at Craigmillar, is in an important position in the Craigmillar regeneration masterplan for Edinburgh.
The design response, drawing on the expertise of the practice’s Education Unit, but also taking input from its Urban Design and Landscape teams, has focused on the topography of the site, and the need to provide excellent academic facilities that are fully integrated within the public building.
The school’s layout has a clear spatial arrangement, with teaching areas above ground level, and extended school functions at ground level, where they will be fully accessible to the community. The landscape design will provide a fully integrated setting for the school within Craigmillar Park.
The College buildings will be sited so that they mesh with local routes and movement patterns, and to ensure maximum visibility from key viewpoints. Scale, massing and detailed design will accentuate sightlines to important cultural landmarks. An internal urban ‘foyer’, a dynamic and engaging space at the heart of the building, will unify fully accessible ground level facilities with strong visual linkages between facilities – and between pupil and public user-groups.
