Grizedale Building
This two storey development for Lancaster University provides Grizedale college with new social and meeting facilities focused around the Grizedale Bar. It gives the college a fresh modern identity within the context of the existing University. As well as the split level bar area, the building also includes meeting rooms, offices, a junior common room, and porter's offices. Importantly, the project acts as a link from the University's major "spine" route to newly completed residential accommodation.

Natural daylight and ventilation are maximised in the building while cross-ventilation is provided by actuator-controlled clerestory windows. Spaces are generous throughout the building; the use of pre-cast concrete floor slabs enabled ceiling heights (3.1m on the ground floor; 2.6m at first floor level) to be increased from those drawn up in early design studies. Circulation pivots around a feature stair, while a lift is provided for disabled access.

The design of the west façade is characterised by a 20 metre-long opening in which is set a curtain walling system. The remaining elevations are animated by 1.8 m openings containing either openable windows or louvre grilles. The building has achieved a BREEAM rating of Excellent.
This is one of a series of projects undertaken by the practice for Lancaster University, including a masterplan, a learning zone, a postgraduate statistics centre, and an extension to the University's management school.
