The January 2010 earthquake in Haiti destroyed many family homes and communal buildings in Haiti partially due to the poor design and construction of the buildings. The devastating effects of the earthquake caused the international community and Haiti’s government to call for a reconstruction strategy in order to provide safe, affordable, and sustainable homes.
JMP proposes a settlement structure which can be erected at speed and low cost to replace homes and community facilities destroyed in the earthquake.
The proposal organises settlements with a community facility at their heart; such as a school, health clinic and market. From here a distinctive and planned community can develop which can be expanded in the future on adjacent plots, as funds become available, to meet future needs.
