Sandra Burslem Building

JMP's first built project in the north-west, the Sandra Burslem Building has provided Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) with a new public face and repositioned the university within Manchester's Oxford Road education and cultural district. Housing the University's Law Faculty, this 65,000 sq ft building incorporates teaching accommodation, lecture spaces and a public gallery in a seven-storey landmark building organised around a dramatic full height atrium.

The building draws on commercial office design principles, and is characterised by a daylit atrium and the dramatic curve of the lecture theatres.  This curve, which acts as a foil to the regularity of the rest of the development, also has profound practical advantages; the timber-clad volume, which has sufficient width to accommodate two lecture theatres, politely tucks itself away to create a generous and playful ground-floor reception and social space.

Delivered on time and on budget the building has proved a spectacular success, both as a marker for MMU and as a highly efficient and enjoyable place for everyone using it.
