The brief specified a clear division between the criminal and civil functions of the building, with their public court halls being completely segregated. The civil and criminal elements of the building are separated by a shared spine of judicial accommodation within a private central atrium space.

 

Another aspiration for the building is as strong an environmental performance as possible, with the project on target for a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating. Therefore, the response to the brief and the site exploits the building’s section to create an environmentally responsive atrium space, lighting deep into the heart of the building and maximising potential for natural ventilation, while all courtrooms are naturally lit.
