Wangari Maathai Institute

The Wangari Maathai Institute, to be located on a 50-acre hillside site within the University of Nairobi campus in Kenya, is dedicated to the achievements of the late Prof Wangari Maathai, one of the world's foremost environmentalists.  Having founded the Green Belt Movement in 1977, Prof Maathai tackled global issues of climate change for over 30 years and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004.  The Institute will promote sustainability principles through practical research learning on site, with demonstration plots, academic facilities, guest housing, a 2,000 seat external amphitheatre, conference centre, and energy and water conservation features.
