The competition-winning design for a sinuous bridge over the River Kelvin in Kelvin Park sought to create an important new pedestrian route linking the University of Glasgow with Kelvingrove Art Gallery, aligning precisely with the principal entrances of the two institutions.
Inspired by Glasgow’s tradition of architectural and engineering innovation, the bridge was conceived as a refined and elegant structure that spans high above the river, minimising impact on the sensitive parkland setting and framing long views along the river corridor.
The original design also incorporated a lower, stepped footbridge that arcs beneath the main span, contributing to the overall stability of the structure while providing an additional, more intimate route across the river. Together, the elements create a distinctive crossing that enhances movement, landscape and public space within the city.
