Peter Jones

London, UK. 2004

The multiple award-winning phased refurbishment and reprogramming of John Lewis Partnership’s flagship department store, Peter Jones, revitalised this Grade II* listed Modernist building designed principally by William Crabtree in the early 1930s – a much-loved landmark facing London’s Sloane Square. John McAslan + Partners’ careful planning of the three-phase scheme, which was completed in 2004, allowed the iconic store to remain open and operational throughout the major works. These included the creation of a large central atrium and circulation heart space, an homage to Crabtree’s unrealised original intention. Other gains included the insertion of state-of-the-art services, improved operational facilities, significantly reduced energy use, and the restoration of the building’s distinctive elevations.
