The Burrell Collection took home two awards, winning both the Culture and Heritage categories, at last night’s Architects’ Journal’s Architecture Awards. The prestigious awards celebrate and recognise design excellence in UK architecture across a range of key sectors. In addition to stand-out design, the judges considered how each project has met or exceeded its brief, promoted client and community engagement and how it has excelled in the use of space or sense of place, as well as sustainability measures put in place.

The refurbishment of the Category-A listed museum in Glasgow, has transformed The Burrell Collection, taking a fabric first approach to markedly improve energy efficiency- achieving BREEAM Excellent- as well as making vast improvements to visitor experience, legibility, and accessibility to create a truly inclusive and welcoming museum for all.

‘You really want to go back, and it’s really successful in terms of its sustainability,’ said the judges, who also praised the project’s ‘amazing’ client. ‘Now it’s a place that you go to experience the history around the collection.’

The success of this project is a credit to remarkable collaboration with our client Glasgow Life and consultant team Atelier Ten, Arup, Narro, Gardiner & Theobald and Event.
