John McAslan + Partners was proud to join Laing O’Rourke and the wider project team in celebrating the launch of All Aboard – Discovering Sydney’s Central Station, a beautifully illustrated children’s book that brings to life the 116-year history of one of Australia’s most iconic transport hubs.

Written by Jackie French and illustrated by Martina Heiduczek, the book was inspired by stories shared during the Sydney Central Station Metro project – a once-in-a-generation transformation of Australia's busiest commuter interchange. It also marks one year since the opening of the Sydney Metro City line between Chatswood and Sydenham.

Charting Central Station’s journey from a tin shed in 1855 to its role today as the nation’s busiest railway hub, the book is both a history lesson and a celebration of place.

As Troy Uleman, Director, John McAslan + Partners, reflected:
"The book is a testament to all those many individuals who shaped Central – from past to present."

The launch event welcomed more than 100 guests, including many who worked on the project. A highlight was Laing O’Rourke’s gesture to gift a copy of the book to every construction worker who contributed – recognising the people who made this achievement possible.

Mark Dimmock, Managing Director, Laing O’Rourke Australia, said:
"What makes this children's book particularly special is that it captures both the transformation of Central Station and its extraordinary history."

Author Jackie French: “This book is to everyone who loves trains and to all the train guards of my many solo train trips between Sydney and Brisbane as a child, who made each journey a fascinating adventure.”

John McAslan, Executive Chairman, John McAslan + Partners added:
“Central Station holds a unique place in Sydney’s story – not just as a vital piece of infrastructure, but as a civic landmark shaped by generations. This book is a celebration of that journey, capturing the spirit of the station through the eyes of children, families, and communities who rely on it every day. We were proud to have collaborated with Laing O’Rourke to help bring these stories to life – stories that remind us that great architecture and engineering are always about people, place, and the legacy we leave behind.”

Proceeds from sales are being donated to the Women and Girls Emergency Centre (WAGEC).
