John McAslan + Partners is delighted to announce that Waterloo Metro Station, Sydney has been shortlisted in the Transport category for the World Architecture News (WAN) Awards 2026.

The 21,000 sqm station, part of the Sydney Metro City & Southwest line, embodies a design approach that blends modern infrastructure with the suburb’s rich Indigenous and industrial history. From the perforated aluminium façades nodding to historic marshlands, to the embedded artworks by Nicole Monks celebrating the Gadigal people, Waterloo Station creates a sense of place that connects past, present, and future.

Troy Uleman, Director of JMP’s Sydney studio, reflects: “The incorporation of Indigenous themes in collaboration with artists and design consultants grounds the station in the area's deep history while symbolising a robust future for First Nations people and their living culture.”

The WAN Awards, now in their 16th year, celebrate excellence in architecture across the globe. Winners in all categories will be announced on 5 March 2026.
