RIBA Journal's September issue on John McAslan + Partners' succession plan. John McAslan: 'We established a new company where 15 of the most senior people (including me) bought in as shareholders, at virtually no cost.' 'In the future more of the team might like to become owners, and even as the new business accrues value we will keep this affordable through mechanisms such as granting share options.' 'Sharing the rewards is the section indicating core important to me; at the risk of sounding schmaltzy, I think that's the way the world should work.' image: the 15 practice owners include directors, associate directors and associates ©Robert Clayton

Belfast Grand Central Station has welcomed its first passengers with bus services now operating from the new multi-modal terminus, set to be the largest integrated transport facility on the island of Ireland when the rail platforms open later this month. The station sets a new standard for the forthcoming renewal of public transport infrastructure and connectivity across the island. The integrated transport hub has been designed by John McAslan + Partners in collaboration with Arup and JUNO for Translink as part of Belfast’s ongoing urban regeneration, providing not only state-of-the-art transit facilities but also a welcoming new front door to the city. Colin Bennie, Director of Transport and Infrastructure at John McAslan + Partners said: “Over the years, our practice has worked on a number of major transport projects in London, Sydney and New York. We’re delighted to build on this experience in Belfast and are excited to see how transport architecture is increasingly considered the defining feature of a modern city that works for everyone. This is certainly what we have sought to achieve for Belfast Grand Central Station.” images: ©Donal McCann

For the newly-built Waterloo Station, Sydney, John McAslan + Partners collaborated with local artists to incorporate the area's Indigenous identity into the station's design, which is highlighted through architectural details, decorative elements and artworks within the station. There are three wall-mounted sculptures at Waterloo, collectively titled 'Footprints on Gadigal Nura', all developed by Indigenous artist Nicole Monks with the continuing Custodians and Aboriginal community who live, work and visit the local area. The word 'Nura' refers to Country in the book 'The Sydney Language' by Jakelin Troy. One of the artworks shown here is embedded on the escalator walls, where hundreds of community members' footprints, cast in electroplated aluminium, form a sparkling map. It was created in collaboration with the local community through the Aboriginal Community Workshop. image: ©Peter Bennetts

The much-anticipated Sydney Metro City line is now open! This is a major milestone for Sydney Metro and it represents the most transformational change to the city since the opening of the Harbour Bridge in 1932. In fact, Sydney Metro is Australia’s largest infrastructure project to date with two stations designed by John McAslan + Partners. The practice’s transformation at the historic Sydney Central Station is expected to receive nearly half-a-million travellers per day. John McAslan + Partners also designed Waterloo Station that is now serving one of Australia’s fastest growing neighbourhoods. Both stations are representative of an approach to transport architecture that seeks to emphasise clarity and calm with a unifying vision focussed on elevating the day-to-day passenger experience.
